HOW ITALY WORKS

A mafia boss's home can become the local school

In Italy, a home confiscated from the mafias can become a school, a community centre or a social cooperative.

That is not a slogan. It is a route written into Italy's anti-mafia system. Seizure is temporary; after final confiscation, the national agency manages the property and it can be transferred for public or social use.

Libera's 2026 RimanDATI report found that 938 of the 1,174 towns receiving confiscated properties now publish their list online: 79.8%. The Anti-Mafia Code requires local authorities to publish what they received, how it is used and, where relevant, who holds the concession.

The reuse network is wider than one kind of project. Libera counted 1,332 social organisations in 448 towns, including 123 working in agriculture and the environment and 35 schools using confiscated spaces.
